Alex Goudie Park Trees of Nations renewal project

The Alex Goudie Park, variously called ‘Native Park’, ‘Flora and Fauna Reserve’ and ‘Memorial Park’, was established circa 1950 as a memorial to Buln Buln Shire councillor, Alex Goudie who died in 1956. Alex Goudie was a far-sighted man for the time. He was a devoted conservationist and joined the Save the Forests campaign in the 1940’s.

The Trees of Nations Project at Alex Goudie Park was commenced in 1988 as part of Australia’s Bicentennial Celebrations. Trees were planted to acknowledge the contributions by the people from various nations who were living in the shire at the time.

The park also contains over 100 large native eucalypts and a rejuvenated wetland supporting a variety of aquatic plants and animals. There is a children’s playground and undercover barbecue area as part of the park’s infrastructure.

The Trees of Nations Renewal Project was commenced by the Friends of Drouin’s Trees in 2020 and has involved research on original trees planted and who planted them. Interpretive signage has been acquired, seats installed, bluestone wall repaired, understorey plantings, etc.

Many thanks for support and advice and much of the ‘heavy work’ go to Andrew Davidson, Gary Websdale, Caroline Ferguson and Daniel Barrand from the shire. The brilliant design work for the signs was done by Helen Timbury designs of Drouin. The signs were made by Drouin Signs. Drouin Men’s Shed manufactured the individual tree plaques.
